Portland, OR -- The marquee at Rose City Golf Course said it all: “Red Hot Golf Tour”.

On Saturday, the inaugural Dick Points Red Hot Golf Tournament sizzled with excitement as 15 players finished within eight strokes of each other, the tourney host choked down the stretch, and a sloppy mistake ended up costing one player the tournament championship.

In the end, it was the consistent Andy Rader, whose 41 on the front nine put him in position to catapult over Dave Charbonneau and Brett Hamel down the stretch to win his first-ever tour championship.

Rader shot a 1-under 71 for his best finish since taking second place at the  2007 Al Fuego Invitational.

Charbonneau and Hamel finished tied for second at even-par 72 and if there was anything Un-Red Hot about the tournament, it was their play at the end.

First, it was Hamel playing Ian Lamont’s ball on the 17th hole. After realizing the mistake, Hamel went back and replayed his shot and finished with a tourney-leading 70. Then came the official ruling: A two-shot penalty and a Dick Points championship down the toilet.

Charbonneau’s choke-job began with an 8 on the 16th hole. He still had a comfortable lead going into the final hole, but hit his second shot into maintenance yard. He never found his ball, took another 8 and then hysterically laughed about the word tubesteak all night.

The tourney started with one late arrival: Tommy Berry who ran a half-marathon in the morning. He got there just as the other groups were teeing off, and proceeded to shoot a 40 on the front nine to emerge as an early leader. He eventually won his foursome, finished 4th overall and most important, kept tour leader Jeff Albright away from big points.

The other foursome winner was Lance Meyerink, who said at one point in the tournament, “I’m playing like crap, but I’m beating these guys.” Indeed, Meyerink beat Larry McKenna, Jason Quick and Jake Panowicz and finished 5th overall.

And then everyone shoved upwards of 50 hot dogs into their mouths.

Red Hot.
