Portland, OR -- The Tailgate State Tour kicked off the 2011 year at Wild Wood Golf Course nestled about 15 minutes from downtown Portland under cloudy conditions. Who would have thought that the two participants who would drive the furthest would battle it out to take home the "Gold" jacket.

The first group to tee off was led by longtime TGS members Tommy Berry and Jim Rader. Tommy - after devouring a classic Wildwood sausage dog - got off to a rough start with a 10 on the opening hole. It did not get much better for him the rest of the front nine. Jim plugged  along and could not manage a par until the 14th par 3. By then it was too little too late.

The Jeff Albright threesome looked like it held potential with the always solid and commissioner Albs and two high handicappers. Jeff made the turn with a 39 after closing with a par, par, par, birdie. But the backside he played like a different Albright - Tim - and that led to him tying for 7th. He did manage to win the long drive hole and a bottle of wine. Tim Tyvand also looked to be the proud owner of a new sports coat at the turn, but hole 15 and 16 were his downfall. A triple bogey followed by a pentabogey(?) were too much for T.

The group of Andy, Dave, Sean, and Dann all struggled out of the gates. Three of the members posted 50s on the front. They all made a huge charge on the back to make it interesting and earn some valuable TGS points.

The winner would come out of the group led by founding father Jason Wold, but much to everyone's surprise it would not be Jason sporting the jacket. Jason played an unbelievable round going 38-38, but his multiple 3 putts were too much for him to win the title. Bob Raser at the turn looked like he may have every opportunity to earn points, but a 63 on the back was too much for him. Then there is Miller Style. He made the turn tied with J-luv with a career best 38. Rumor was they were sizing the jacket for him all that was left was the back 9, and if you know Miller Style, his specialty is the backside! A 9 on 16 though left the door open for others to make their move.

The most entertaining and slow group of the day was the threesome of Rinker, Rich, and Teubner. The group behind them thought they were playing as a 6some it took so long. Rinker made the turn sitting very pretty, but a 56 on the back and his chances for a title went up in smoke. Rich scored very consistently with a 42 and a 44 and rumor has it was a big winner in side action. Tubes battled away and ended up in 3rd place for the tourney.

The final group of Charlo, Tal, Scott H, and Alex brought two new TGS members. It was Alex's first time ever stepping foot on a course, and he had to battle the constant heckling of Scott. On numerous occasions Scott was heard telling Alex, "time to pick up your ball, we will give you a 10." On the back 9 Scott showed why he was named 1990 Mr. Panther with some long blasts off the tee-box. Charlie awed the newcomers with his drives and play, however consistent putting for Charlo could not be found. Tal played the round of life shooting a 47 on the front and a 43 on the back. 90 is his lowest score ever to finish in 2nd place behind Jake Miller Style.

It was a great way to start off another TGS year. We look forward to seeing everyone at the HBO at Camas Meadows. Thanks for playing!
