He left most of his balls in the forests surrounding Salish Cliffs Golf Club but Kevin Palmer went home with the Tailgate State Cup and a good chunk of money from the Squaxin tribe, thanks to his robust blackjack play on Friday night.
His lead proved to be insurmountable as no one could reach the massive amount of points he had accumulated during the regular season. Tom Wortman put up a valiant effort to shoot net twelve strokes under par but it wouldn't matter. Jeff Albright was the only one with a mathematical chance to catch Palmer but triple-bogeys on the opening hole on both days sealed his fate.
The course was particularly difficult for the high-handicappers, despite playing from white tees that made driver unnecessary for several players. Many began the tournament with crippling hangovers and started spraying shots far and wide into the beautiful timber-lined fairways. On his second hole, Rich Wold made the mistake of trying to hit from the tall fescue grass on one of the many "Cliffs of Salish" only to watch his ball trickle onto a cart path and meander down the hill. Much like a native Chinook salmon returning to spawn, his ball ended up back where it had begun life: some 200 yards away near the tee box.
Sunday brought refreshed players - many were in bed by 9:00 PM on Saturday - but blustery conditions that made the course much tougher than the previous day. Jake Panowicz (2019 Comeback Player of the Year?) topped an outstanding 76 on Saturday with a disappointing encore but took solace in his bitchin' new car and golf clubs. Only four players were able to improve upon their score from the previous day and most spent the day alternating between sunscreen and rain gear as wind gusts and showers made their way around the course.
Salish Cliffs' combination of outstanding golf, short distance from Portland, casino wagering and ample firewater had most of the field in a positive, reflective mood and wondering what 2019 would have in store for the Tailgate State Tour. Palmer will attempt to become the third person to win the cup in back-to-back years while they rest of us try to check him into the boards and wrestle it away for ourselves.
Good luck, be well, see you in April.
